AUSTIN, TEXAS – Governor Greg Abbott has declared September 25, 2026, as “Dolly Parton Day” in Texas, commemorating the late singer, songwriter, and philanthropist’s significant impact on early childhood literacy. This special observance falls one month after Parton’s passing on August 25 and aligns with the annual “Give Like Dolly Day.”
The proclamation highlights Parton’s Imagination Library, which distributes free books to over 74,500 children across 90 counties in Texas. Abbott referred to the day as “9 to 5 Day,” a nod to Parton’s iconic song, acknowledging the profound loss felt across the nation with her departure.
“Our nation lost a bright light with the passing of the ‘Queen of Country,’ Dolly Parton,” Abbott expressed in the proclamation. The recognition not only celebrates her illustrious music career but also her extensive humanitarian efforts, particularly through the Imagination Library, which aims to promote literacy from birth to age five.
The Dollywood Foundation reports that the Imagination Library program operates with the support of more than 70 local partners in Texas, providing essential literary resources to young children. Abbott noted, “Her philanthropy empowered people, especially through the Imagination Library, which she created to support early literacy and inspire a love of reading.”
In addition to being Dolly Parton Day, September 25 also marks Give Like Dolly Day, an occasion dedicated to fundraising for local Imagination Library initiatives. Governor Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott have urged Texans to honor this day with meaningful activities and to support libraries and community organizations that facilitate book distribution to the youth of Texas.
This tribute comes in the wake of widespread mourning for Parton, with notable figures, including former President George W. Bush, expressing their condolences and paying homage to the country music icon and philanthropist’s enduring legacy.
