"Remembering the Deep Ellum Halloween Shooting Victim: A Friend's Heartfelt Tribute as Suspect Search Intensifies"

In the wake of the tragic Halloween shootings in Deep Ellum, friends and family are mourning the loss of Unique Benjamin, a 28-year-old woman who was one of four victims killed during the violence. As authorities continue their investigation and search for suspects, a close friend recalls the harrowing moments leading up to the incident.

Oshshanae Rose, who had been friends with Benjamin for a decade, was en route to meet her on Halloween night when chaos erupted. “As I arrived, I just saw a whole bunch of people running, and people screaming and cars backing up, police yelling and the lights,” she recounted. Benjamin was among the four individuals shot and killed that night, alongside Kaniesa Scott, Anthony McCleary, and Isaiah Boling, all of whom lost their lives in the violence.

Rose described her best friend as her entire world, stating, “We did everything together. It felt like I knew her forever.” The location of Benjamin’s last moments remains a painful reminder for Rose, whose phone still shows her friend’s position in Deep Ellum. “My friend was so sweet, she didn’t deserve this,” she expressed, conveying the profound sense of loss.

In the broader community, activists like Untruan Train Grant are striving to address the underlying issues of violence in Deep Ellum. Grant, who runs a street team called Learn With Train, highlighted the need to redirect youth who are drawn to the area. “Deep Ellum is an entertainment district that’s for adults,” he stated, emphasizing that many young individuals are simply looking for a place to have fun, some even facing homelessness.
