The Houston Texans have staged a remarkable comeback from an initial 0-3 record to a commendable 8-5, highlighted by a crucial victory over the Kansas City Chiefs that has reignited their playoff ambitions. The Texans’ defense played a significant role in this game, effectively limiting Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to one of his least impressive outings, with three interceptions and only 14 successful completions.
With four games remaining against opponents with a mix of records, the Texans are well-positioned to solidify their playoff berth and could even contend for their division title.
Texans’ NFL Playoff Hopes Looking Up
HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Texans have made an incredible turnaround this season, bouncing back from a disappointing 0-3 start. This early phase, which included a 17-10 loss to division rival Jacksonville Jaguars, left many fans feeling uncertain about the team’s playoff prospects.
Fast forward ten weeks, and the Texans have improved to 8-5, celebrating a significant victory against the Kansas City Chiefs—a team they had not beaten since 2019. This triumph has officially placed the Texans back in the playoff race, securing the seventh Wildcard spot in the AFC, and they now trail the Jacksonville Jaguars by just one game in the AFC South standings.
Stingy Defense Keeps Patrick Mahomes in Check
A consistent highlight for the Texans this season has been their tenacious defense. Entering this matchup, they held the top defensive ranking in the NFL and continued to showcase that strength on Sunday night.
The Texans’ defense pressured Patrick Mahomes into one of his poorest performances of the year, as he completed only 14 of 33 passes and was intercepted three times. Additionally, the Texans managed to keep the Chiefs scoreless in every quarter except the third, thwarting their attempts to convert critical third and fourth downs throughout the game.
CJ and the Offense Make Enough Plays
Even with both teams exhibiting strong defensive capabilities, C.J. Stroud and the Texans faced considerable pressure from Kansas City. However, the Texans took advantage of several key plays, including explosive connections between Stroud and wide receiver Nico Collins, as well as red zone touchdowns from their running backs, ultimately leading to a 20-10 victory over the Chiefs.
Looking Forward
With four games left on the schedule against the Arizona Cardinals (3-10), Las Vegas Raiders (2-11), Los Angeles Chargers (8-4), and Indianapolis Colts (8-5), the Texans have an excellent opportunity to cement their playoff position and possibly secure the division title.
