In a celebration of community spirit and holiday cheer, the Interlochen Christmas Lights attraction in Arlington, Texas, is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year. This beloved tradition transforms a quiet neighborhood into a dazzling holiday destination, attracting visitors from all over.
With nearly 200 homes participating, the Interlochen Lights have become a hallmark of the season. This year’s celebration is particularly poignant as it serves as a reminder of the warmth and love that embody the true spirit of Christmas.
For Barb Reed, the tradition of decorating for Christmas was a cherished collaboration with her late husband, Keith. Known for his craftsmanship, Keith spent countless hours in his workshop creating beautiful displays of lights, trees, and garlands. Over the years, their installation grew to feature an impressive 35,000 lights, embodying the festive spirit of the season.
However, following Keith’s passing in 2021 after 62 years of marriage, Barb found it difficult to continue the tradition. “I just didn’t have the heart to do anything. In fact, I gave all my lights away,” she shared, reflecting on her loss.
As the 50th anniversary approached, Barb received unexpected support from the Slater family, who reside in the Interlochen community. Determined to keep the tradition alive, Noelle Slater and her family stepped in to assist Barb in rekindling the holiday spirit. “We just wanted to do our part to keep the tradition going,” Noelle explained. “We want to lend an extra hand to anybody who needs it, to fill any dark spots.”
The Slaters have been actively helping neighbors decorate, utilizing donated items to ensure the neighborhood shines brightly this holiday season. Kyle Slater humorously noted, “Sometimes I’ll get up in the morning and I feel like a little elf: ‘Well, which houses do we have to hit today?’”
The impact of this community effort has not gone unnoticed, as People Magazine recently recognized Interlochen as one of the top 10 Christmas light displays in the country. This year, more than 100,000 visitors are expected to experience the enchanting displays.
Local authorities advise visitors to plan accordingly, as traffic is anticipated to be slow-moving. “Expect it to take about an hour to get through the entire trail,” warned Arlington PD’s Tim Ciesco.
As the Interlochen Lights prepare to welcome guests, one home stands out, embodying a legacy of love and remembrance. “Miss him terribly,” Barb reflected. “He was one of a kind.”
The Interlochen Christmas Lights officially begin on Saturday, December 13, and will be illuminated nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Christmas Day. Admission is free, inviting all to partake in this cherished holiday experience.
