The Kyle Police Department has confirmed that a person was hospitalized following an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Kyle on Thursday morning. The individual was taken to the hospital after being detained by federal officers, with emergency medical services facilitating the transport while Homeland Security personnel accompanied them.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra reported that the incident occurred outside a Costco store, where the individual allegedly suffered injuries from ICE agents, resulting in visible bleeding from the face. He expressed concern over the level of force used, stating, “They beat up a shopper. They beat them up so bad that they needed to call for paramedics. Really? … There’s an army of you to take one person down.” Becerra criticized the agents for their lack of de-escalation training, likening their approach to military tactics from the Vietnam War era.
Kyle Police are currently verifying the details regarding the injuries sustained by the detained individual. Meanwhile, ICE operations have also been reported in nearby Buda, where city officials announced that agents planned to use a transport vehicle parked at City Hall as a base for their activities in the area. However, the city had requested the relocation of the bus to free up limited public parking, to which ICE complied.
Buda city officials clarified that neither the city nor the Buda Police Department are involved in the ongoing ICE operations. Although specific details regarding the transport vehicle’s current location were not disclosed, Judge Becerra mentioned that the agents are operating from a large, unmarked white bus.
<p“I'm not trying to thwart, undermine or usurp laws,” Becerra emphasized. “What I'm trying to do is inform people like a car wreck, like a tornado, like a fire. I am saying, ‘Guys, this chaos has been brought upon [our] community, and this is where it's at, and this is what's going on.'”
