Seventy volunteers joined forces at the Nueces Mosque in Downtown Austin on Sunday to prepare 20,000 meals for the Central Texas Food Bank, aiming to address food insecurity in the region.
This initiative, spearheaded by Islamic Relief USA, brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds and faiths to collaborate on this vital cause. The meals are intended to provide immediate nutritional support to local families in need.
“Today we’re actually trying to pack 20,000 meals,” stated Tayseer Abubakar, a volunteer engagement specialist with Islamic Relief USA. The nonprofit organization focuses on alleviating poverty and delivering aid to those in urgent need throughout the country. This particular weekend, their efforts were concentrated on Central Texas.
For over four hours, the volunteers diligently worked to prepare meal bags for prompt distribution. Abubakar noted, “Today we’re in Austin; last weekend I was in San Antonio, and two weekends ago, I was in New Orleans.” He emphasized the inclusive nature of the event, saying, “We have people from all different demographics—men, women, Muslims, Christians, Jews—everyone is welcome to contribute and help feed families in need.”
Abubakar elaborated on the meal packing process, which is organized into stations. “The first station involves adding rice, beans, seven spices, and carrots into the meal bags. The second station weighs the ingredients to ensure they meet nutritional standards, and the third station seals the bags.” Once completed, these meal bags are handed over to the Central Texas Food Bank, which ensures they reach those who require assistance.
<p"There isn't a specific demographic; it’s anyone who comes to the food banks. We trust the food bank to distribute the meals to those who need them," Abubakar explained.
This meal packing drive is just one of many initiatives organized by Islamic Relief USA across the nation. The nonprofit encourages anyone interested in volunteering to get involved, with more information available on their website.
