Delays in the construction of a new practice facility may result in the Dallas Wings incurring additional expenses. Originally slated to open in 2026, the facility in Oak Cliff is now a year behind schedule and significantly over budget.
The project was estimated to cost $57 million, with the city expected to contribute this amount, which includes approximately $600,000 allocated to cover delays. However, the team will take on the role of developer, responsible for over $25 million to complete the project, pushing the total expenditure to more than $80 million.
During a recent Dallas City Council meeting, members opted to postpone a vote regarding public funding for the facility, choosing instead to continue discussions in committee.
Some council members are advocating for prompt action, emphasizing the city’s obligation to uphold its commitments. “It looks terrible for us, it’s causing problems for the team,” stated Cara Mendelsohn, a Dallas City Council representative. “And really, it’s just another notch in the belt of another failed real estate project that we have not delivered on time or on budget.”
Furthermore, the Wings are facing additional challenges with their facilities. The team has agreed to vacate the College Park Center in Arlington and is set to play in a renovated Dallas Memorial Auditorium, with the transition expected to occur at the start of the 2026 season. However, the renovation work on the arena will not be completed until the spring of 2028.
Details regarding the situation were discussed during a recent Dallas City Council meeting.
