The Austin Police Department is being commended for its swift response to a mass shooting that occurred at a bar on West 6th Street. On March 1, a gunman opened fire at Buford’s, injuring 19 individuals, including himself, and resulting in three fatalities.
Officers from the Austin Police Department arrived at the scene in just 57 seconds, showcasing an impressive response time in a critical situation. Michael Bullock, President of the Austin Police Association, emphasized the urgency of their arrival, stating, “We’re not talking about minutes; we’re talking about seconds from the time that it starts to the time that we’re there. It’s just incredible.”
The rapid response was crucial, as the situation could have escalated further without the timely intervention of law enforcement. Bullock noted that while the average police response time during active shooter incidents typically ranges from three to four minutes, the department’s ability to reach the scene in under a minute is exceptional.
Witnesses described the chaos that unfolded, with local resident Michael Martin recalling hearing 20 to 30 gunshots before witnessing police sirens rapidly approaching. The police’s prompt action likely prevented further casualties.
In the aftermath of the shooting, three officers discharged their weapons and fatally shot the attacker. Following department protocol, these officers have been placed on administrative leave. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the officers for their bravery and rapid response, highlighting the numerous acts of heroism displayed during the incident.
In related news, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office has concluded its review of the officers’ actions and has decided not to pursue criminal charges. The internal investigation by the Austin Police Department is also nearing completion.
The FBI has acknowledged the “extraordinary bravery and swift response” of the Austin police officers involved in the incident. In the wake of the shooting, a nonprofit organization is accepting donations to support the officers, offering assistance for various needs such as medical care and counseling for trauma-related issues.
