A tragic incident at a gas station in Dallas has led to the loss of an unborn child, with the victim being a minor. Her grandmother revealed the heartbreaking news following the shooting that occurred last week.
The victim, along with two others, was pursued and shot by 17-year-old Yeremy Aleman Zapata and 20-year-old Keyner Ariel Calero-Jiron after a dispute at a 7/11 gas station. Both suspects now face multiple felony charges related to the incident and potential deportation, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that neither is in the country legally.
The two suspects are charged with capital murder among other felonies for the death of the unborn child, whose grandmother disclosed that the victim is only 17 years old. “I’m very angry,” said Cynthia Trevino, the victim’s grandmother. “Why in the world do they have guns?”
According to Trevino, her granddaughter was 22 weeks pregnant when the shooting occurred. The child was fatally injured in the womb due to gunfire from the suspects. Following an emergency cesarean section, the mother was able to hold her baby before the child passed away. “It was a blessing for us — and they took it away from us,” Trevino expressed. “They’re going to live with that for the rest of their life. They destroyed their own life because they’re young.”
ICE has reported that Calero-Jiron is a national from Nicaragua who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022. Zapata Aleman is a citizen of Honduras, although ICE did not provide specific details regarding his immigration status. Both individuals are now facing deportation in addition to their murder charges. If convicted, they could either face the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Trevino commented, “I don’t care what they do to them. If they give them the death penalty, it’s not going to bring the baby back. It doesn’t matter what — my baby’s not going to come back.”
The shooting unfolded on May 3 around 12:40 a.m. when Dallas Police responded to a report of gunfire in the 4700 block of Wimbelton Way. Upon arrival, they found three victims, one of whom had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses indicated that the confrontation began at the 7/11 gas station on Buckner Boulevard, where a verbal and physical altercation erupted between the driver of the victim’s vehicle and Calero-Jiron and Zapata Aleman. Following the argument, the suspects followed the victims in their vehicle and opened fire, hitting the occupants. Another vehicle was also damaged in the shooting, but its driver was unharmed.
Police later apprehended the suspects after they crashed their vehicle during a chase. Inside, officers discovered cocaine and MDMA, along with illegal firearms.
Calero-Jiron is now facing a total of nine charges, including five counts of aggravated assault, evading arrest, possession of cocaine, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and one count of capital murder due to the infant’s death. Zapata Aleman faces seven charges, which include five counts of aggravated assault, possession of cocaine, and one count of capital murder related to the infant’s death.
