The Spring Branch Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees has made a decisive move regarding the future of Northbrook Middle School, voting unanimously to close the institution for the 2026-27 academic year. The decision, taken during a recent workshop meeting, has sparked significant reactions from the community.
During the meeting, a total of seven board members voted in favor of the closure, which was met with protests from concerned parents and community advocates outside the venue. Many individuals expressed their disappointment, emphasizing their desire to keep the school operational.
District leaders have pointed to a range of challenges as reasons for this outcome, including dwindling enrollment numbers, limited resources, and ongoing budget constraints. Currently, Northbrook Middle School is functioning at approximately 50% capacity, with around 450 students enrolled. Furthermore, the district is bracing for a projected budget shortfall of $24 million in the upcoming school year.
To address these issues, the district plans to rezone current students from Northbrook to either Spring Oaks, Spring Woods, or Landrum Middle School, depending on their residential locations. This consolidation is intended to allow the district to utilize its resources more efficiently across the remaining middle schools.
In addition to these changes, district officials have reassured staff that all current employees at Northbrook will remain on payroll and will be reassigned to different schools within the district. Transportation will also be provided for all students transitioning to their new schools, with families given opportunities to visit the new campuses prior to the academic year’s end.
