In a fiercely contested runoff election, incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn faced a significant defeat against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the Republican nomination. Despite the outcome, Cornyn expressed his unwavering commitment to support the Republican ticket in the upcoming general election.
Paxton’s victory became clear early in the evening as results rolled in after polls closed at 7 p.m. By 8:30 p.m., he had garnered over 60% of the votes, while Cornyn fell below 40%.
During his concession speech delivered in Austin, Cornyn emphasized his long-standing dedication to the Republican Party both in Texas and at the national level. “I’ve spent most of my time in the Senate building the Republican party in Texas, and in the U.S. Senate, and I’ve always supported the Republican ticket. And I intend to do so again in this general election,” he stated.
Having served in the Senate since 2002, Cornyn reflected on his accomplishments and shared a biblical verse that resonated with him: “I’ve fought the good fight, I’ve finished the race and I’ve kept the faith,” quoting the Apostle Paul.
In response to his victory, Paxton expressed gratitude towards Cornyn for his years of service to the people of Texas during his speech in Plano.
Looking ahead, Paxton is set to face Texas State Representative James Talarico in the general election scheduled for November.
