A man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison following a fatal shooting that occurred during a drug deal robbery in San Antonio in 2023. Ray Espinosa, who was 17 at the time of the incident, received his sentence from Judge Christine Del Prado in the 227th District Court.
In addition to the lengthy prison term for the fatal shooting, Espinosa was also handed a concurrent 20-year sentence for three counts of aggravated robbery. Prosecutors described the events of January 2023, where Espinosa allegedly arranged a meeting with a group for a drug transaction, intending to execute a robbery.
During the confrontation, a passenger in the vehicle attempted to defend himself, prompting Espinosa to fire his weapon. Tragically, his actions resulted in the death of another passenger, identified as Jonathan Heredia.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Rebecca Gorham and Daryl Sherman led the prosecution in this case. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales expressed that while the sentence cannot reverse the devastating impact of Espinosa’s actions, it represents an important step toward healing for Heredia’s family.
