During the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Dallas Stadium, Japan and the Netherlands played to an exhilarating 2-2 draw, captivating fans from both nations on a warm Sunday afternoon.
Many attendees expressed their admiration for the stadium’s atmosphere, claiming it surpassed any previous events held at what is commonly referred to as AT&T Stadium. Supporters from the Netherlands and Japan marveled at the venue, noting its stark contrast to their home stadiums.
International fans shared their thoughts, with one Dutch supporter exclaiming, “That was great, really great. Truly American, I have to say.” He further praised the stadium’s amenities, particularly its air conditioning, which is not a common feature in European venues.
George Homminga, another Dutch fan, reflected on the match’s outcome, feeling disappointed after Japan equalized late in the game. However, he still appreciated the day, stating, “We had difficulty with the temperature, but it was a great day. Perfect all around.”
Several Dutch supporters were pleasantly surprised by the number of Japanese fans in attendance, highlighting their enthusiasm and energy. “And they made more noise… the Japanese had drums, so that was spectacular,” one couple remarked.
Nicky Koonjbeearry, donning a Netherlands shirt, expressed admiration for the Japanese fans, stating, “Japan had the best energy. I know I’m wearing a Netherlands shirt but Japan forever.”
Japanese fans echoed this excitement, with Alecia Withers declaring, “It was so fun in here. Better than anything ever in AT&T Stadium. I had so much fun.” Another jubilant supporter exclaimed, “That was a roller-coaster! We came back!”
The match itself was a thrilling affair, as the Netherlands and Japan exchanged goals in a lively second half. Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville initially put the Dutch team ahead, only for Japan to respond with determination, equalizing with an 88th-minute header from Daichi Kamada.
This match marked the first of nine World Cup games scheduled to take place at Dallas Stadium. The next matchup in North Texas is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, featuring England against Croatia.
