A new initiative has been launched to enhance education standards in Texas, with the Texas Classroom Commission established under the leadership of Governor Greg Abbott. This teacher-led group is tasked with formulating strategies aimed at elevating Texas to the forefront of educational excellence.
Governor Abbott announced the commission, emphasizing its mission to transform public education, boost student performance, and position Texas as the leading state for education in the United States. Currently, Texas ranks 25th in education according to U.S. News and World Report and falls to 41st place on Wallet Hub’s list of the Most and Least Educated States in America.
The commission will consist of both current and retired educators, with former Dallas-area math teacher Courtney Boswell MacDonald at the helm. As chair of the State Board for Educator Certification, MacDonald brings extensive experience, having previously worked with the Senate Education Committee and served in various education reform organizations.
“Texas teachers know what their students need to succeed,” Governor Abbott stated. “The Texas Classroom Commission will unite exemplary public school educators to uncover innovative solutions that enhance student success, improve classroom environments, and strengthen our schools. By empowering those directly involved in education, we aim to build on Texas’ achievements and ensure our state leads the nation in the education of our children.”
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows presented the commission as a continuation of the state’s commitment to education, following recent legislation that increased teacher salaries.
The commission is expected to commence its activities in the coming weeks, with plans to submit its recommendations to Governor Abbott, the Texas Education Agency, and the Legislature before the next legislative session.
