In Houston, a significant number of mourners, community leaders, and public officials gathered to pay their respects during the visitation of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 35-year-old resident who was tragically shot by an ICE agent. The visitation took place at Great Chapel at Forest Park Lawndale and lasted for four hours, drawing a steady stream of attendees, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire.
As the community came together to honor Salgado’s life, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare addressed ongoing efforts to obtain crucial evidence from federal authorities amidst multiple investigations. Teare indicated that while the FBI is cooperating and sharing information with his office, the Department of Homeland Security has not provided the name of the ICE agent involved in the incident. He emphasized his commitment to gathering all necessary evidence for a comprehensive investigation.
The Texas Rangers are also involved in the investigation. Teare expressed his determination to hold accountable anyone responsible for the loss of Salgado’s life, stating, “If someone can be held criminally responsible for taking a 35-year resident’s life, it doesn’t matter who you are, you can’t hide behind a badge. We will hold you accountable.”
Among those who attended the visitation was Gilbert Moreno, who voiced the shock felt by the community regarding the tragedy, highlighting a collective sentiment that the government has strayed from its intended path. “There are people who care about him that are shocked by this tragedy,” he remarked.
Support for Salgado’s family was evident among attendees, with Cesar Espinoza from FIEL Houston noting the family’s resilience. “They are increasingly strong. They are also increasingly humble to share this very intimate moment with the community,” he said, underscoring the character of those Salgado raised.
Notably, Lorenzo’s brother was unable to attend the visitation, as he remains detained at an ICE facility in Conroe, along with two other passengers who were in the van with Salgado at the time of the incident.
