The head coach of Lake Travis High School’s football team expressed profound sorrow following the tragic death of a player earlier this week. Odin Hensley, a senior lineman on the varsity squad, passed away after suffering a medical emergency during practice on Monday, which was later identified as cardiac arrest.
Coach Hank Carter addressed the heartbreaking situation during a team gathering on Saturday, typically held as an inter-squad scrimmage. He conveyed the overwhelming grief felt by the team and community, stating, “We’re devastated and heartbroken. When you lose a young person, you’re never the same. Seeing our kids and our community dealing with this is something I can’t even put into words.” He acknowledged the challenges ahead in processing such a loss.
Carter highlighted the extensive support the team and school have received, not only from the Austin area but from across the nation. “When something like this happens, it’s scary for everybody,” he remarked, reflecting on the sense of unity that emerges during such difficult times.
Hensley was remembered as an exceptional young man, described by Carter as “built like a Mack truck” and a standout athlete, both as a powerful offensive lineman and an all-state wrestler. “He was just the nicest kid,” Carter added, emphasizing the immense loss felt by those who knew him.
