AUSTIN, Texas – In a solemn ceremony held at the Texas Capitol, Governor Greg Abbott awarded the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to Army Sergeant Rickey Wittner and posthumously to Navy SEAL Nathan Gage Ingram. This prestigious honor, the highest military decoration for members of the Texas military forces, recognizes extraordinary acts of bravery and sacrifice.
Sgt. Rickey Wittner, a Vietnam veteran, was honored for his heroic actions on July 10, 1970, during the Vietnam War, where he saved 12 lives under life-threatening conditions. His commendations include the Soldier’s Medal for heroism, a Purple Heart, and an Air Medal. Wittner enlisted in the Army in 1969, serving with the 242nd Assault Support Helicopter Company and later joining the Army Reserve and Texas Army National Guard, from which he was honorably discharged in 1987.
Navy SEAL Nathan Gage Ingram was recognized posthumously for his bravery during a nighttime mission off the coast of Somalia on January 11, 2024. Ingram lost his life while attempting to rescue a teammate. He enlisted in the Navy in 2019, completed SEAL training in 2021, and served with SEAL Team THREE. His military accolades included the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, among others.
During the ceremony, Governor Abbott remarked, “Today, we honor two men who answered the call for our nation. We will never forget the sacrifices they made for our country and for their fellow service members.” The event was attended by several state lawmakers and Texas Military Department Adjutant General Thomas Suelzer, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the valor of Texas heroes.
