A significant fire in Baytown has resulted in a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky following a “process upset” at the Raven Butene-1 facility. This incident occurred on the East Freeway and was first reported on Wednesday evening.
Authorities confirmed that the “process upset” led to visible flames and smoke, which could be seen from a distance. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
By 7 p.m., officials indicated that the black smoke and flames had dissipated, and the situation appeared to be under control. A statement from the facility explained that the event was caused by a temporary flaring incident triggered by a power outage. They assured the public that there were no safety concerns or damages related to the event.

According to the company’s website, Phoenix Power Group was involved in the construction and commissioning of the facility, providing comprehensive support throughout the project, including design, engineering, and operational training programs.
History of Incidents
This is not the first occurrence of a “process upset” at the Raven Butene-1 facility. In May 2025, a similar incident took place due to a power failure, which also resulted in visible black smoke. Additionally, in June 2025, a chemical fire erupted at the facility, following an earlier incident that resulted in a chemical burn injury. Investigations revealed that this fire was caused by a chemical reaction from leftover materials.
The situation at the facility underscores the ongoing challenges faced by industrial operations in maintaining safety and managing incidents effectively.
