In the spotlight is Congressman Joaquin Castro, a Democrat, who faces off against Republican challenger Edgar Baez. The contest is gaining attention, especially as key races for statewide offices such as Governor and Senator tighten, with Texas Democrats gaining momentum while some Republican candidates aim to flip traditionally Democratic regions.
Castro has come under fire for his stance on immigration, particularly regarding support for undocumented immigrants. Baez criticized Castro, claiming he is disconnected from his constituents’ needs, stating, “He has failed and abandoned the constituents instead of helping them. He prioritizes aiding illegal immigrants over the concerns of local residents.”
Recent events have further complicated Castro’s campaign. He announced an upcoming hearing on a proposed ICE detention center, and earlier this week, he expressed solidarity with a man shot during an ICE enforcement operation in Austin.
Baez has heightened his critique, labeling Castro as out of touch, especially following the recent ICE incident that resulted in gunfire. Castro took to social media to voice his concerns about ICE, describing the agency as an “abusive rogue organization” and questioning its credibility in conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
Despite running in a district that has historically leaned Democratic, Baez is optimistic about his campaign’s traction at the local level. He emphasized the need for change, citing rising poverty and deteriorating public safety under Castro’s long tenure. “The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing while expecting different results,” Baez remarked, underscoring his call for new leadership.
In broader campaign news, James Talarico has challenged Ken Paxton to a debate, proposing FOX News as a platform for the discussion. Meanwhile, the only confirmed debate thus far is between Bo French and Jon Rosenthal, candidates for Railroad Commissioner.
Additionally, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has released a new campaign advertisement portraying himself as a defender of rural Texans. His Democratic opponent, Vikki Goodwin, has raised concerns about a recent social media attack ad by Patrick, claiming he delayed its release following her criminal complaint regarding deepfake content.
