A pastor from Cypress is receiving immense support from his community after enduring a life-threatening medical emergency during a trip to Hawaii. Sidney O’Pry, who founded Overflow Fellowship Church in Cypress in 2013, is currently in need of funds to return home for his recovery.
O’Pry’s daughter, Robin Mires, shared that her father suffered an aortic tear while snorkeling. Following the incident, he underwent extensive surgery and spent several weeks in the intensive care unit, fighting for his life. At one point, his family faced the heart-wrenching decision to remove him from life support.
In a surprising turn of events, after being taken off life support, O’Pry began to breathe on his own, and his condition stabilized. Mires described the moment as miraculous, emphasizing her father’s lifelong commitment to helping others through his church and mission trips.
“It’s been really humbling to see not just friends and family, but even strangers come together to help bring him back home,” Mires remarked, highlighting the community’s response to her father’s situation.
O’Pry is now stable enough to be transferred to a hospital in Texas; however, the costs associated with his transport are significant and not covered by insurance. The family is currently working to raise the necessary funds, with over $30,000 collected toward their $50,000 goal.
Community members from Overflow Fellowship Church have also stepped in to support O’Pry and his family during this challenging time. Church member Laura Colchado expressed, “He is a man with a huge heart, and we long for him to be back.” Another member, Sarah Church, noted the remarkable way the congregation has come together to meet the needs left in O’Pry’s absence.
The support the family has received reflects the positive impact O’Pry has made over the years. As they continue to fundraise, the hope remains that he will return to Texas soon, surrounded by the loved ones and community he has dedicated his life to serving.
