Autonomous drone deliveries have officially commenced in Central Texas, marking a significant advancement in delivery services. The company Zipline, which initiated its operations in Round Rock, is now preparing to expand into Austin.
The service allows customers to place orders through the Zipline app from a selection of participating local restaurants and stores. With plans to launch in Austin later this year, the innovative delivery method is set to reshape how residents receive their goods.
Local resident Ashley Sanchez has taken notice of the new drones flying through her neighborhood. Intrigued by her children’s curiosity, she decided to test the service for herself. “It’s exciting to see something new. When your kids see others receiving deliveries, you naturally want them to have the same experience,” Sanchez shared, highlighting the novelty and fun of the service.
Using the app, Sanchez ordered cinnamon rolls from Schlotzsky’s, eager to share the experience with her children and their friends. “There were so many food options available. When the drone arrived, the kids were thrilled to watch the food descend from the sky,” she recounted.
Zipline initially gained recognition for its vital deliveries of blood to hospitals in Rwanda. Since then, the company claims to have successfully completed over three million deliveries, encompassing not only medical supplies but also food and retail items. The service aims to alleviate the burden of traffic and reduce the need for extra trips.
“Ziplining helps save people time. It has gained popularity, especially among busy parents, seniors, and those without access to vehicles,” explained Zach Hill, a spokesperson for Zipline.
As drone deliveries become more common, concerns regarding their impact on local neighborhoods are starting to surface. However, Zipline assures that its delivery system has been designed to limit noise and that the electric drones produce zero emissions.
“We’ve conducted one of the largest aviation testing programs ever, flying hundreds of thousands of flights. The community can be confident in the safety of this system,” Hill emphasized.
Recently, Zipline launched its service at Stony Point High School, where students from the CTE drone team placed and received the first order, marking a new chapter for the company. With plans to extend their services to Austin later this year, the anticipation continues to build in Central Texas.
