Houston Crime Victims Advocate Faces Death Threats and Family Concerns After Controversial Abbott Ad

April Aguirre, a crime victims advocate in Houston, has reported that a political advertisement supporting Governor Greg Abbott has resulted in death threats, harassment, and heightened concerns for her family’s safety. The ad prominently features Aguirre discussing the tragic murder of her 9-year-old niece, Arlene Alvarez, which has sparked significant backlash.

Wendy Alvarez, the mother of Arlene, has publicly condemned the advertisement and is demanding its removal. In a detailed Facebook post, she expressed her disapproval, stating, “I did not agree to make my daughter part of anyone’s political campaign. I did not agree to use her tragedy to influence votes.”

Aguirre commented on the situation, highlighting that Wendy had to release a statement due to the intense harassment and hate directed at their families. She emphasized the absurdity of attacking someone based on their political support, reiterating that while she participated in the video, Wendy was not involved. Aguirre noted the overwhelming volume of threatening messages they have received.

Wendy Alvarez has chosen not to engage with media requests, stating in a prepared statement, “At this time, I respectfully decline any interviews, news coverage or public statements regarding myself, my family or my daughter Arlene. The past few days have been extremely overwhelming and emotionally difficult for my family. I have already made my position clear publicly, and I do not wish to participate in any further media attention.”

In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Abbott’s campaign, Eduardo Leal, stated that they have not had any discussions with Wendy Alvarez regarding the advertisement.
