After establishing himself in the Fort Worth music scene by performing at venues like Lola’s Saloon and the Granada Theater since 2009, Benny Smoke is making a comeback with a new EP and single. The hip-hop artist, who has overcome alcohol addiction, is ready to share his latest work.
His new track, “Wobble,” features a powerful old-school ’90s beat and addresses pressing social issues. “Wobble is an anthem for those who desire change in the world, distancing ourselves from those who harm our environment and cater solely to their wealthy friends,” Smoke explained. He aims for the song to contribute positively to hip-hop culture.
Having grown up on the South Side amidst drug dealers, gangs, and fellow aspiring rappers, Smoke draws on his past to inspire rather than criticize. His lyrics reflect this intention: “Aim and pull, watch the world collide in two / Ride the wave that has swallowed away the view / Plug it in, see the visions coming true / Last transmission / Replace what is human under skin / Seek faith, there is nothing else to give / Sacrifice / You and I, we never win / Who are we kiddin’?”
Smoke recorded, mixed, and mastered “Wobble” entirely in his home studio, with production by German artist Rice Master Yen. He notes that creating the track on his phone lends it a raw energy and authenticity.
Set to release his debut album soon, the title of which has yet to be revealed, Smoke has been active in the music scene, dropping nine singles and four EPs in recent years. He is excited about the upcoming album, which he describes as a concept piece that aligns with hip-hop and cannabis culture, showcasing his growth as an artist. “The album is rattling around. I’m feeling good about it,” he shared.
Influenced by artists like Erykah Badu, Wiz Khalifa, and Larry June, Smoke is passionate about inspiring others through his music. “When I perform, it feels good, and I see people respond to my stories. That gives them hope,” he remarked. He aims to ignite the same passion in others that fueled his own journey.
In a gesture of support, all proceeds from Smoke’s upcoming performance at Haltom Theater will benefit the family of Derek Jones, a close friend who recently died by suicide.
