Texas Businesses Can Now Exempt $125K of Inventory from Taxes: What You Need to Know

Texas businesses will soon benefit from a significant tax exemption, thanks to the approval of Proposition 9 by voters. This legislation permits businesses to exclude up to $125,000 of their inventory or equipment from taxation, a move aimed at easing the financial burden on these entities.

The newly approved measure replaces the existing law, which only exempted property valued at $2,500 or less from taxes. With this update, businesses will be protected from taxation by various entities, including school districts, cities, and counties.

Under House Joint Resolution 1, the Texas legislature is empowered to exempt a portion of the market value of income-generating personal property from property taxes, enhancing the overall business climate in the state.

The ballot language for this amendment stated: “The constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation a portion of the market value of tangible personal property a person owns that is held or used for the production of income.”

Importantly, the state will take responsibility for compensating school districts for any revenue loss resulting from this tax exemption, ensuring that educational funding remains intact.

This decision reflects a broader trend of supporting local businesses while also addressing the complexities of tax revenue distribution within the state.
