In Fort Worth, Texas, a 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a series of vehicle arsons that instilled fear in the local community during the holiday season. Authorities apprehended the suspect, identified as Evan Banda, after a thorough investigation into five car fires that occurred between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.
Fire and police investigators were able to connect the incidents through neighborhood surveillance footage. The fires took place overnight, typically between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., leaving several residents without transportation and on edge during the festive season.
Investigation and Arrest
The chief fire investigator, Battalion Chief David Jones, noted that identifying the suspect was difficult due to the absence of a license plate. However, the investigation progressed as they tracked Banda’s movements via various surveillance videos from neighboring homes.
Banda was arrested at his residence early Thursday morning, just before 6 a.m. Despite being a minor, he is expected to face prosecution as an adult. Police Chief Eddie Garcia emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing such crimes, stating, “When individuals are taking part in these types of crimes, they will escalate to something at some point.”
Community Impact
The arson incidents primarily affected families living near Fox Run Park, with each home located less than a mile and a half from Banda’s residence. One victim, Michelle Barrera, recounted the moment her son’s car caught fire shortly after midnight on December 28, describing the chaos as her husband and son-in-law noticed flames through the garage window and heard a loud bang.
According to Jones, the fires exhibited a consistent pattern. “The windows were broken out, and they were all entered the same way. The fire was started in the interior compartment using the same type of ignitable liquid,” he explained.
As the investigation concludes with Banda’s arrest, Chief Garcia expressed relief that the community could rest easier. “We will always work together to ensure that we stop that fear and that we bring suspects to justice,” he affirmed.
