A tow truck driver is being celebrated as a hero after he bravely rescued a man from a frozen pond in Seagoville, Texas. The incident has garnered widespread admiration across North Texas, highlighting the driver’s quick thinking and courage in a life-threatening situation.
The Seagoville police chief emphasized that a mere two-minute delay in the rescue could have resulted in a tragic outcome for the man, who was found submerged in icy waters. Douglas Lane, a 41-year-old tow truck driver, played a crucial role in this rescue operation.
Lane reported that he first became aware of the emergency when he observed a man behaving erratically near a drainage culvert along the highway. Hearing desperate cries for help, he quickly spotted the individual struggling in the frigid water and immediately dialed 911.
Despite his efforts, Lane found the situation overwhelming as the man was too heavy to pull out alone. However, with the assistance of several police officers, they successfully retrieved the man from the freezing temperatures.
Upon rescuing him, the team discovered that the man was unresponsive. Noticing signs of possible drug use, officers administered Narcan, an opioid reversal medication, which effectively revived him. The man was later transported to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia and is currently in the intensive care unit.
The Seagoville Police Department plans to formally recognize Lane for his heroism at an upcoming city council meeting, celebrating his selfless act that undoubtedly saved a life.
While the circumstances leading to the man’s fall into the water remain unclear, the police have commended Lane’s swift response. Interim Chief Steve Davis remarked that had Lane not acted when he did, the outcome could have been fatal. He described the harrowing moment, stating, “He had a faint pulse…his eyes were rolled back in his head.”
Lane recounted his instinctive reaction during the rescue, saying, “Whenever I reached down there to grab him, that’s when his head was underwater.” Despite feeling fear for the man’s safety, he maintained his composure, driven by a sense of duty to help.
In a touching reflection, Lane credited his grandmother for instilling in him the values of kindness and assistance, saying, “My grandma is the one that taught me to always help strangers. Always help somebody in need, and that is what I went with. I just helped him.”
