A Kerrville high school student is currently in recovery after a serious incident involving a school bus last week.
The student, 17-year-old Zayne Boggs from Hill Country High School, was navigating his electric skateboard when he lost control and fell into oncoming traffic. His family has indicated that he faces a lengthy rehabilitation process ahead.
Zayne, who frequently uses his skateboard to travel around town, was excitedly heading to his new job at the Wash Tub Car Wash after school when the accident occurred. “It was my paycheck day and my first paycheck. So, I was pretty excited. And I was going down the sidewalks like usual,” he recounted.
While riding along Sidney Baker Street, near the Kerrville Police Department, Zayne hit a bump that caused him to lose control of his skateboard. “I ran into the rumble strips, it caused my board to sway side to side. I couldn’t keep up with it. And so I was going at least, you know, 15, 20 miles an hour on my little board,” he explained.
Tragically, while he was on the ground, a school bus struck him. “I remember looking up from the concrete, trying to scream for help. Obviously, my first few words were help. And there I was able to look over and look down at myself. And I saw, from my perspective, the backside of my body. And that’s how I knew that I was mangled,” Zayne recalled.
Jessica Boggs, Zayne’s mother, received the distressing call that no parent ever wants to get. “As I answered the phone, I could hear the sirens. So, I knew something was wrong. And then the man came over and said, there’s been an accident. Your son’s been run over,” she shared.
Zayne was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, accompanied by his mother. He sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures in his pelvis and spine, a broken left leg, a ruptured bladder, and injuries to his colon, among others. He has undergone five surgeries, one of which lasted nearly ten hours.
<p"Every day was just a normal day for me. It can happen to anybody. It doesn't have to be an accident. It does not have to be someone's fault. You can genuinely just be there at the wrong time, and it is devastating, but be more aware and be more appreciative of what you have," Zayne reflected on the incident.
Kerrville Independent School District (ISD) has acknowledged the incident, stating that the school’s principal has been in contact with Zayne’s family to support them during his recovery. His mother noted that he is making progress each day, although the road ahead remains challenging. “Not rushing it. But they see him walking and, you know, recovering,” she remarked.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with Zayne’s medical expenses and recovery.
Kerrville ISD released a statement regarding the incident, expressing their concern for Zayne and his family. “We are aware of the incident involving one of our students and our KISD bus. Our thoughts are with the student and their family, and our principal has been in touch with the family on several occasions since the accident to ensure the student is recuperating. The safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority, and we are working closely with the family and appropriate authorities to ensure the student has everything they need during recovery,” the statement read.
