Austin Airport's South Terminal Closure: Key Update in AUS Expansion Project

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s South Terminal officially closed its doors today, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s ongoing expansion efforts.

Ghizlane Badawi, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of this transition for the future of air travel in Austin. “The South Terminal has played a meaningful role in our airport’s growth, and we are grateful for the passengers, partners, and team members who have been part of its success,” she stated. Badawi further noted that consolidating all airlines under one roof will enhance service to the community while laying the groundwork for future infrastructure needs.

Since its inauguration on April 13, 2017, the South Terminal has accommodated millions of travelers. Its closure is a strategic move to facilitate the New Midfield Taxiways project, which is a key element of the Journey With AUS expansion program. This initiative aims to improve aircraft movement across the airfield, alleviate congestion, and boost overall operational efficiency.

Starting April 1, 2026, all Allegiant and Frontier flights will shift operations to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, effectively unifying all commercial air services at AUS. This consolidation is expected to enhance the passenger experience by providing centralized access to ticketing, security screening, dining, shopping, and other amenities.

Before the anticipated opening of the new Concourse B, airport officials plan to construct and open Concourse M. Details of this development were shared on March 23. Both the new Midfield Taxiways and Concourse M will occupy the site of the former South Terminal, necessitating its closure and demolition.
