The City of Austin is actively seeking organizations to manage its new South Austin Housing Navigation Center, a facility aimed at providing essential resources for individuals at risk of homelessness.
Last year, the city acquired a building located near I-35 and East Oltorf, previously a game room. Plans are underway to transform this site into a comprehensive resource hub, which will assist residents in connecting with housing support and various social services. The initiative is backed by up to $250,000 in funding allocated for the operation of the center.
However, the project has encountered some opposition from local residents, who express concerns about its proximity to Travis High School and Travis Heights Elementary. Neighbors have reported an increase in visible homeless activity in the area, raising apprehensions about the center’s impact.
The Austin City Council previously voted 8-3 in favor of purchasing the $4 million property to establish this controversial homeless center. The selection of an operational organization for the center is still pending.
David Gray, the director of Austin Homeless Strategies and Operations, emphasized the need for an experienced operator. “What we’re looking for is someone who understands human services and can navigate the complex web of housing assistance. This could be a single organization or a collaboration of multiple organizations specializing in different areas,” Gray explained.
The application process for selecting an operator will commence on Monday, April 13. Interested parties can find more information through official city channels.
