Tragedy struck the world of boxing as rising professional athlete Hannah Rapp lost her life in a bicycle accident near College Station, Texas. Rapp, who also held a position at Texas A&M University, was struck by a vehicle driven by Charles Eric Medina, who has since been charged with manslaughter.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning when Rapp was cycling along FM 159 with her boyfriend. According to police reports, Medina passed them closely while driving at a high speed. After Rapp’s boyfriend attempted to alert Medina by raising his arms, the driver reportedly slammed on the brakes, reversed, and accelerated into Rapp, resulting in severe damage to the vehicle and the bicycle.
Witnesses at the scene described the aftermath, with emergency services already transporting Rapp when they arrived. Her boyfriend recounted the traumatic experience of not being able to see her due to the injuries she sustained.
In a statement to authorities, Medina claimed he was unaware of Rapp’s presence until the last moment, asserting he was traveling at a speed of only 15 miles per hour. However, evidence collected at the scene, including skid marks and the extent of damage, contradicted his account, indicating a much higher impact.
Medina, who has a criminal history that includes charges of reckless driving and assault, was subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter as the investigation into the incident continues.
Rapp’s impact on the boxing community was significant. Her coach, Carl Perry, expressed deep sorrow over her loss, reminiscing about her exceptional talent and the bond they shared. Rapp joined Bryan Boxing in 2024 and quickly established herself as a formidable opponent in the ring, achieving five wins in seven fights, including a championship title.
As the local community grapples with this tragic loss, Texas A&M University released a statement honoring Rapp’s contributions, acknowledging her dedication both as an employee and an athlete.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Bryan Boxing to celebrate Rapp’s life and legacy. Additionally, a petition is circulating to advocate for legislative reforms aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
