Lt. Col. Allen West has officially resigned from his role as chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party, a position he held for some time. The announcement was made by the party on social media, where they expressed their gratitude for West’s contributions and appointed Tami Brown Rodriguez as the acting chair.
In a statement regarding the transition, Rodriguez said, “Lieutenant Colonel Allen West has resigned from his position as the Chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party. We are deeply grateful for his exemplary leadership, steadfast dedication, and unwavering commitment to election integrity and security. His service has played a significant role in advancing the Republican Party in Dallas County to where we stand today.” She emphasized the party’s focus on upcoming elections, stating, “Together, we stand united, energized, and ready for the path ahead.”
This resignation follows a recent decision by the Dallas County Republican Party to revert to countywide voting procedures for the upcoming elections after a chaotic primary day in March. The party had previously attempted to separate polling locations for Republicans and Democrats, resulting in significant confusion among voters that necessitated an extension of voting hours by a judge.
Shortly after the primary, West announced the decision to return to a countywide voting system, arguing that shifting to precinct-based voting for the runoff would lead to major disruptions. In a statement, he remarked, “From the end of April through May there will be municipal elections and early voting for the runoff. All of these elections are countywide voting. To then shift for the one day runoff election to precincts would bring about large scale disruption.”
On April 6, West defended his decision to reverse the polling changes, asserting that his actions were guided by a sense of responsibility and leadership. “The decision that I made was one rooted in years of understanding leadership and its responsibilities, namely, protecting your Troops,” he stated. He added that he would not allow the organization to face potential legal challenges during his tenure as chairman.
At this time, the specific reasons behind West’s resignation have not been publicly confirmed, and it remains unclear if it is directly linked to the recent polling changes.
