The resignation of Representative Tony Gonzales has created a vacant position in Texas’ representation in the U.S. House of Representatives. This seat can be filled if Governor Greg Abbott decides to call for a special election to complete the remaining term.
Gonzales stepped down following internal party pressure after acknowledging an affair with a former staff member. Despite being in a runoff for the Republican nomination against Brandon Herrera, he had previously declared that he would not seek reelection.
In Texas, a special election can only be initiated through a proclamation from the governor. As of now, Abbott’s office has yet to announce a timeline for when a special election might be held to fill Gonzales’ seat.
Press Secretary Andrew Mahaleris indicated that further information regarding the seat will be forthcoming.
California Schedules Special Election
In a related development, California has already set a date for a special election to fill the vacancy left by Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned following allegations of sexual assault. That election is scheduled for June 16.
The situation in California may prompt Texas to expedite its own special election process.
Currently, Republicans maintain a narrow majority in the U.S. House, holding 218 seats to the Democrats’ 213.
Looking Ahead in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District
With Gonzales no longer in the race, Brandon Herrera, a firearms manufacturer and popular YouTube personality known as “The AK Guy,” is poised to be the Republican nominee for the upcoming November election. He is anticipated to compete against Democratic nominee Katy Padilla Stout.
Recent primary election results indicate a potentially competitive general election, with Democrats garnering slightly more total votes than Republicans in the district.
