Following their matches in Arlington, Texas for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, elite soccer players will pack their bags and return to their home countries, such as Croatia, Argentina, and Japan. However, one remarkable soccer boot is here to stay, and I had the opportunity to speak with it in a video featured in this article.
The Texan Golden Boot statue, which I interviewed, has deep ties to the local area. Crafted by Steve Ekpenisi with assistance from Street Art for Mankind, this statue is made from reclaimed metal sourced from the region. Known affectionately as TGB, the statue has found a permanent residence across Randol Mill Road from Globe Life Field in Arlington. In our discussion, TGB elaborated on the excitement of its new location, which is captured in the video.
Interestingly, many soccer leagues prohibit the use of metal cleats, and while the rules of the game may not specifically mention them, wearing boots with spurs would likely result in an immediate red card. This makes TGB somewhat of a rebel in the soccer world. Additionally, the statue has strong views on the sport, which it shared during our interview.
Currently, TGB is surrounded by greenery in the Arlington Entertainment District’s park area. However, the North Texas FWC Organizing Committee and the North Texas Sports Foundation aim to provide a more solid foundation for the statue through their Buy a Brick campaign. Contributors willing to donate between $500 and $5,000 can have their names inscribed on bricks placed near the sculpture, creating a lasting tribute.
My conversation with the Texan Golden Boot was enjoyable and surprising. Although it appears rigid and metallic, TGB proved to be quite at ease in front of the camera, reminiscent of a casual loafer disguised in a steel-toed boot.
Throughout the video, we referenced several notable figures and concepts which I will clarify here for those who may not be familiar:
- Jose Altuve: The Houston Astros’ longtime second baseman, who has thrived in the sport despite his height of only 5-foot-6.
- Usain Bolt: Considered one of the greatest sprinters of all time, Bolt was known for his distinctive footwear and his attempts to transition into soccer.
- Peter Crouch: A towering 6’7″ English forward who played for several teams in the English Premier League, including Liverpool and Tottenham.
- Golden Boot: An award bestowed by soccer governing bodies to the top goal scorer in a competition.
- Diego Maradona: An Argentine soccer legend, often hailed as one of the greatest players in history. His infamous “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 quarterfinal against England remains a significant moment in sports lore.
- North Texas Sports Foundation: A nonprofit organization dedicated to leveraging major sporting events for sustainable community benefits.
- Silver Boot: A trophy awarded annually to the team that wins the majority of games in the series between Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.
- Tottenham Hotspur: A prominent London football club in the English Premier League, commonly referred to as “Spurs.”
