Leander Police Boost Enforcement Against Illegal Powered Bikes on Streets

Leander police are ramping up their enforcement of street-illegal electric bikes and e-motor bikes, citing a significant rise in their presence on public roadways and the ensuing safety concerns.

The Leander Police Department has launched a “Ride Safe, Ride Legal” initiative aimed at promoting safe mobility within the community, especially with the summer break approaching. Enforcement actions will begin this week.

Currently, the City of Leander does not have specific ordinances governing “E-bike” devices, prompting officers to enforce existing state laws. The police are reporting that children have been injured, property damage has occurred, and unsafe riding practices are jeopardizing public safety.

Under the new enforcement measures, officers will issue citations or warnings to riders of e-bikes exceeding 750 watts or capable of speeds over 28 miles per hour. If the rider is under 17, their parents will be contacted and may also face citations for allowing illegal operation of the vehicle.

While e-bikes are permitted to use roadways, bike lanes, sidewalks, and bike paths, riders are required to adhere to the same traffic laws that apply to motor vehicles. In contrast, motorbikes are prohibited from operating on public streets, highways, or sidewalks, irrespective of the rider’s age or licensing status, but are allowed on private property.

Greg Minton, Chief of Police, expressed shared concerns among officers, many of whom are parents themselves. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all children on the roads. To engage the community, a traffic sergeant has been attending parent-teacher association meetings to directly communicate with parents. Chief Minton encourages discussions about responsible riding and parental involvement in the purchase of e-bikes.

The department plans to distribute further educational resources to the community. Additionally, Leander PD has established a dedicated email, ridesafe@leandertx.gov, for inquiries regarding the legality of e-bikes and general e-mobility concerns.
