A family has initiated legal action against the City of Houston and CenterPoint Energy following an incident in which their 9-year-old son was reportedly shocked by a light pole at F.M. Law Park. The lawsuit was filed in the wake of this alarming event, which occurred just weeks prior to another case involving a different child who was hospitalized after touching the same pole.
According to the boy’s mother, the shocking incident took place on April 2 during her son’s baseball practice at the park. She described the moment, stating, “I heard my son screaming. I heard the coach screaming. My son put his hands on the pole, he grabbed the pole and got electrocuted.” Following the incident, her son expressed a desire to go to the hospital, claiming he felt as though he was dying.
In the aftermath of the shock, the boy has been undergoing therapy and continues to experience anxiety as a result of the traumatic event. His mother expressed a determination to seek justice for her son and aims to prevent similar incidents in the future through their lawsuit.
The complaint alleges that the City of Houston and other relevant parties failed to ensure the proper maintenance of F.M. Law Park, which is owned by the city. While both the City of Houston and CenterPoint Energy acknowledged the lawsuit, they refrained from commenting due to the ongoing litigation. CenterPoint Energy emphasized its commitment to delivering safe and reliable electric service to its 2.9 million customers in the Greater Houston area.
Additionally, the lawsuit names The First Tee Greater Houston and the Houston Golf Association. Representatives from these organizations stated, “We are aware of the lawsuit and are studying the petition and allegations. First Tee Greater Houston and Houston Golf Association do not utilize or manage any part of the baseball facilities at F.M. Law Park.”
This legal action follows a separate incident involving 14-year-old Angel Galeas, who suffered cardiac arrest and was hospitalized for two weeks after being shocked by the same light pole. His mother revealed that he is now experiencing headaches and balance issues, and is currently reliant on a wheelchair.
The family’s lawsuit highlights serious concerns about safety at the park, raising questions about the maintenance of public facilities and the responsibilities of the entities involved.
