A Fort Worth firefighter, Todd Brook, is facing a dual challenge as he battles Stage 4 pancreatic cancer while urgently seeking a kidney donor for his wife, Jennifer. Despite his own health crisis, Todd’s primary focus remains on securing a transplant for Jennifer, whose kidney function has deteriorated to just 22%.
Having dedicated 30 years to the Fort Worth Fire Department, Todd received his cancer diagnosis last October after an MRI revealed concerning spots on his pancreas. His wife, Jennifer, explained that prior to his diagnosis, Todd had intended to donate one of his kidneys to her as she has been grappling with progressive kidney failure for several years.
“UT Southwestern has informed me that I wasn’t eligible for a transplant until my kidney function reaches 20%. However, my doctors decided it was best to start the transplant process and placed me on the list,” Jennifer stated.
In the midst of his own health struggles, Todd reached out to his fire department colleagues for assistance in raising awareness about Jennifer’s need for a kidney donor. He requested media interviews to help amplify their search. Craig Trojecek, a spokesperson for the Fort Worth Fire Department, shared, “Todd’s ultimate wish was to ensure we did everything possible to secure a kidney for Jen. His focus was entirely on her well-being.”
Despite his condition worsening, Todd has shown moments of responsiveness, such as squeezing Jennifer’s hand. “He still wants to fight,” she remarked. “When I asked him if he wanted me to do the interview, it was clear he did.”
