Houston Mayor John Whitmire has expressed strong concerns regarding the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), labeling the agency as “out of control.” In light of a recent fatal shooting involving an ICE agent, Whitmire, alongside Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare, has pledged to utilize all available resources to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
During a recent statement, Mayor Whitmire emphasized that the FBI currently possesses all the pertinent evidence related to the incident, including the van involved, the passengers, and the deceased individual. An attorney representing two of the passengers has raised alarms, indicating that they may face pressure to self-deport and that their accounts contradict those provided by ICE agents.
Whitmire has called for federal authorities to share this evidence with the Houston Police Department (HPD) to facilitate the investigation. He referenced his extensive experience as Chairman of Criminal Justice in Austin, where he oversaw multiple police action reviews, noting that none were as severe as the recent incident involving ICE in Houston.
Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia also weighed in, highlighting the lack of identification on the vehicle used by ICE agents, stating, “There were no markings on the car, there was no siren, no lights, no cherry top.” She urged the public to empathize with the situation, asking, “Put yourself in their shoes, what would you have done?”
In response to the shooting, Police Chief Noe Diaz announced plans to meet with agents from the Houston FBI office to discuss the investigation further. The community is anxiously awaiting developments as officials strive for clarity and accountability in this troubling situation.
