Arlington ISD's Back to School Event: Free Supplies and Health Screenings for Families

Arlington ISD is making a significant impact as students prepare to embark on a new academic year, providing essential resources to ease the transition.

In a recent back-to-school event held at AT&T Stadium, the district distributed 8,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on local families. Additionally, attendees were offered complimentary health services, including vision and dental screenings, haircuts, and shoes, alongside support from nearly 100 community organizations. Over the years, this annual initiative has contributed more than 100,000 backpacks to help students begin their school year with confidence.

Superintendent Matt Smith emphasized the importance of ensuring students feel successful from the outset. “On that first day when kids walk in the class doors, we want them to feel successful from the start,” he stated, highlighting the essential role that having adequate supplies plays in achieving this goal.

For families like Evelyn Cramer, a grandmother reliant on Social Security, the event proved invaluable. “A lot! I don’t have any money to get this, so if it wasn’t for this she wouldn’t have school supplies,” Cramer remarked, underscoring the necessity of such community support.

Excitement surged among students as they eagerly anticipated the contents of their backpacks. “And in this bag I have no idea,” said student Summer Howell before unveiling her supplies. “I’ve got 100 sheets of paper, washable markers, scissors,” she exclaimed, reflecting the joy of discovering much-needed items.

Parents echoed the sentiment that purchasing school supplies can quickly escalate in cost. “Easily $100 or more,” noted mother Jaqueline Alvarejo, as she shared the financial strain many families face. “It’s something less to worry about,” added Analidia Rivas, highlighting the relief provided by the event.

Over the years, Arlington ISD has consistently provided support to families, with the distribution of 100,000 backpacks. Alvarejo expressed her gratitude, stating, “The way the economy is going, I’m very grateful that something like this exists. It’s really important based on work and employment at the moment that we have this resource to be able to come and get school started.”

Beyond supplies, the event also offered free haircuts, shoes, and health screenings, showcasing a comprehensive approach to supporting students and their families. The participation of nearly 100 community organizations further enriched the experience, providing valuable resources and information to attendees.
