A tragic incident on a Texas highway has claimed the life of a 19-year-old college student, allegedly due to the reckless actions of a driver with a history of DUI offenses. Crystal De Luna was fatally injured on July 26 in a multi-vehicle crash involving Jonathan Samuel Moses, 33, who reportedly drove on the wrong side of Highway 380.
Moses, who has four prior DUI convictions from Maine and New Hampshire, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Authorities discovered open alcohol containers and a handgun inside his pickup truck. The devastating loss has left De Luna’s family demanding justice and accountability for Moses’ actions.
Described as a vibrant young woman, Crystal was preparing to enter her second year of college and was enjoying her summer. Her mother, Vanessa Ramirez, expressed her heartbreak, stating, “My heart is broken because I don’t have her, and I know that she will not come back. She was my baby, my best friend. She was 19.”
On the night of the incident, Ramirez believed her daughter was safe and on her way home after being out with her boyfriend. Checking her daughter’s location on her phone, she felt reassured. However, her world shattered when she received a phone call from medical personnel informing her of the tragic accident.
Ramirez recalled her shock, saying, “I was like, I thought about everybody else but her, because in my head she was in her room, sleeping. But when she said it was her, just there’s no words.” The grief and disbelief she felt cannot be understated.
Witnesses and police reports indicate that Moses drove his truck recklessly, crossing lanes on Highway 380 and colliding with multiple vehicles. A police affidavit revealed that he appeared to be highly intoxicated and claimed to have consumed two margaritas prior to the crash.
Ramirez voiced her frustration over the repeated offenses by Moses, asking, “How many more times does this have to happen for you guys to actually do something? Or until now that he actually killed somebody, you guys are doing something?”
Moses’ previous DUI convictions have only intensified Ramirez’s anguish. She lamented that his actions have irreversibly changed her life, stating emphatically, “To me, that’s not manslaughter. That’s just murder. To me, you murdered my daughter, and you’re out, and it’s not your first time.” She is determined to seek justice for her daughter, insisting that Moses must be held accountable for his actions.
Currently, Moses faces charges of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and unlawfully carrying a weapon. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the consequences of this tragic event, as a grieving family seeks closure in the wake of their profound loss.
