Airbnb has announced a significant investment of $6.4 million to revitalize a long-stalled housing development in Austin, Texas. This funding aims to support the creation of 201 affordable housing units alongside 325 mixed-income residences. This initiative marks the first project under Airbnb’s newly launched $250 million national program, which seeks to unlock $5 billion in housing capital over the next ten years.
The St. John redevelopment, situated at 800 E. St. John Avenue, will not only provide over 500 homes but also include retail space, a park, and public art installations. The investment is a crucial step in overcoming a five-year construction delay attributed to financial shortfalls, despite community backing and tax incentives from a state affordable housing program.
In addition to the construction funding, Airbnb is committed to advocating for housing policy reforms in Austin. This includes potential changes to zoning, permitting, and building codes. The company is partnering with AURA, a local housing advocacy group that promotes policies allowing for increased housing density, such as permitting duplexes and small multifamily developments. This support will enable AURA to hire its first paid staff member to further its mission.
Local officials have expressed their support for Airbnb’s investment. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson highlighted the importance of collaboration between companies, local organizations, and community leaders in addressing the housing crisis. Mayor Pro Tem José “Chito” Vela echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a collective approach to tackle the city’s housing shortages.
Airbnb’s initiative also includes contributions to nonprofit organizations within the St. John neighborhood, focusing on economic empowerment and promoting homeownership. The Housing Accelerator program aims to address the barriers that hinder affordable housing development, combining capital investments, policy advocacy, and support for innovative construction methods.
