A local florist in Austin is navigating one of life’s toughest challenges while still spreading joy this Valentine’s Day. Carly Blair, who has been diagnosed with late-stage rectal cancer, is reaching out to the community for support as she continues to manage her business through this difficult time.
Blair, who founded her hospitality firm Margot Blair in 2009, has dedicated years to helping others celebrate significant moments. Known for her floral arrangements and concierge services, she has been a cornerstone of the community’s celebratory occasions. However, her life took a dramatic turn last year when she survived a serious car accident that left her with a shattered leg and a severe concussion.
As she began her recovery, a routine doctor’s visit revealed a more daunting diagnosis. “Just as I was starting to walk again in late September, I learned that I had nearly stage 3b rectal cancer,” Blair recounted. Since her diagnosis, she has been balancing treatment with managing her business.
Despite undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, Blair remains committed to her work. “During my off weeks, I feel like myself again, but the weeks of chemotherapy are profoundly challenging,” she explained. To adapt to her health needs, she is transitioning her business operations online temporarily.

It’s a bright spot in my life, providing a welcome distraction from the more difficult aspects of my journey,” she shared.
Resilience is a key theme for Blair, who is determined to find positivity even amidst adversity. “There’s always something good if you take the time to look for it, and focusing on the positives helps me through the tough times,” she added.
While Blair hopes to fully restore her business in the future, she emphasizes the importance of community support during this transitional phase. She encourages flower purchases not just for Valentine’s Day, but beyond, to help sustain her shop. “People often forget that after Valentine’s Day, business can dip significantly. Buying flowers next week and the week after would be incredibly helpful,” she noted.
