Austin police are actively searching for a suspect captured on surveillance footage stealing copper from a construction site in East Austin early Thursday morning. The construction site on Shady Lane has experienced eight copper thefts since late March, indicating a troubling trend of targeted thefts at this location.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. in the 1100 block of Shady Lane. According to the Austin Police Department, the suspect was seen removing copper metal from the premises.
This particular site has been a frequent target, with authorities reporting a total of eight copper thefts since March 30, 2026. Despite ongoing investigations, the identity of the thief remains unknown.
Members of the public who may have information regarding the suspect are encouraged to reach out to the Austin Police Department’s Commercial Burglary Unit at 512-974-5308. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
