Gas prices in Central Texas are experiencing a significant surge, largely due to escalating tensions in Iran that threaten the global oil supply. As a result, drivers in the region are feeling the financial strain at the pump.
Residents are increasingly forced to make difficult budgeting choices as fuel prices rise. One local, Jairon Horn from Pflugerville, expressed his frustration, stating, “I had to cut down on other things. I’ve honestly had to put money aside and, you know, do extra things like Door Dash and stuff just to have extra gas money.” Horn, who commutes to Austin for work, noted that his drive often takes an hour, making high fuel costs particularly burdensome.
Horn further explained the impact on his transportation choices, saying, “I’ve also had to buy a new car because I had a pickup truck, and driving a pickup in traffic is like, you’re gonna break even on your paycheck messing with the gas prices, so yeah, it’s outrageous.”
Recent developments include a significant escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, where U.S.-Iran ceasefire efforts are precariously hanging by a thread following Iranian attacks on the UAE. Just last week, a $40 fill-up was sufficient in Travis County, but as of May 6, that amount barely covers three-quarters of a tank.
<p"You can feel it, especially if you drive a vehicle that takes supreme gas, or anything other than unleaded. It's going to hit your pocket pretty good," Horn added, reflecting the widespread concern among drivers.
AAA reported that the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Texas reached $4.04 on Wednesday, a six-cent increase from the previous day and roughly 30 cents higher than a week ago. In Austin, diesel prices are even steeper, currently standing at about $5.22 per gallon.
<p"If it goes up from here, yeah, I probably won't be driving my truck for a while," Horn remarked, highlighting the growing anxiety among motorists. The repercussions of these high prices extend beyond individual drivers; airlines have also been affected, with over 13,000 flight cancellations nationwide this month due to soaring jet fuel costs.
