North Texas ska band Boss Riot has released their much-anticipated second album, Here We Go Again, which serves as a poignant soundtrack for the complexities of human life.
Sinking into my couch, I pressed play on the album, closing my eyes to let the music wash over me. Each track resonated deeply, mirroring the universal themes of existence: heartbreak, family dynamics, the pain of loss, identity struggles, and the resilience to move forward. The band’s diverse backgrounds, with over a century of collective experience from groups like Rude King, No Questions Asked, The Pilfers, The Exceptions, Mr. Kingpin, and Informant, infuse the album with a rich tapestry of ska, reggae, and rocksteady, all given a contemporary spin.
Here We Go Again delves into the cyclical nature of life, reminding listeners that even as we confront the feeling of starting anew, every experience shapes who we become. The track “Good Enough” tackles the burden of meeting someone’s constantly shifting expectations against an upbeat, danceable rhythm. Conversely, “Lazy Days” adopts a slower tempo, featuring a doo-wop style that celebrates the cherished moments spent with loved ones.
“Don’t Grow Up Too Fast” offers a heartfelt reminder to children to cherish the present, drawing inspiration from classic Jamaican musical styles. The album concludes with “If It’s Over,” a soulful ballad featuring harmonizing vocals from Vicki Tovar and Chris Casey, encapsulating the quiet heartache that arises when love alone cannot surmount life’s trials and the inevitable paths we each must tread.
This sophomore effort has been in development for several years, with the band not releasing music since before the pandemic lockdown. During this time, members have faced significant personal challenges, including surgeries, cancer battles, recoveries, and the loss of loved ones. The album encapsulates these pivotal moments, reflecting on priorities through authentic and powerful songwriting. Christopher Casey, who plays keys and trombone, highlighted the collaborative nature of the album, noting that different members contributed to songwriting to maintain its freshness and allow individual tracks to shine. Lead vocalist Tovar emphasized that the album carries an uplifting message, focusing not on darkness, but rather on resilience and the joy in overcoming difficult times.
Ultimately, Here We Go Again stands as a musical memoir that encapsulates the essence of the human experience.
Boss Riot will perform on Friday, July 24, alongside The Shortwaves and Mean People at The Cicada, located at 1002 S Main St, Fort Worth.
