Dallas Cowboys Part Ways with All Pro Cornerback Trevon Diggs: Latest Updates

The Dallas Cowboys have made the decision to part ways with cornerback Trevon Diggs ahead of their season finale, following a series of injuries and inconsistent performances. The former All-Pro player will enter the waiver wire, where he may be claimed by another team or become a free agent if he remains unclaimed by Wednesday afternoon. The future of this playmaker, who has struggled to regain his elite form since suffering an ACL tear in 2023, is uncertain.

Trusted sources confirmed the news of Diggs’ release, which was reported by ESPN’s Todd Archer on Monday. Now, he will go through the waiver process, and should he not be picked up, he will become a free agent.

Once a vital component of the Cowboys’ defensive strategy, Diggs contributed to a unit that ranked 30th in yards allowed per game and last in passing yards allowed. This decision marks the end of the tenure for one of the franchise’s most effective ball-hawking defenders, occurring just three months after the trade involving Micah Parsons. This move highlights the team’s emphasis on maintaining roster flexibility and addressing health concerns.

The decision to release Diggs also alleviates some financial pressure on the salary cap as the Cowboys continue to revamp their defense under the guidance of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Just last year, Diggs had signed a five-year contract extension.

Selected as a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2020, Diggs quickly established himself as one of the most formidable playmakers in the league’s secondary, leading the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021. However, over the last three seasons, he has only been able to participate in 21 games, managing just three interceptions for the Cowboys defense. The two-time Pro Bowler was sidelined for most of the 2023 season due to an ACL tear and has played only eight games this season.
