Gracie the giraffe has returned home after an extensive and meticulously planned rescue operation. This remarkable event unfolded following her disappearance, which lasted several weeks.
On June 12, Gracie, who stands an impressive 16 feet tall and weighs 1,600 pounds, managed to escape from the Cedar Hollow Ranch in Leaky, Texas. The news of her absence quickly garnered national attention.
Dr. Pat O’Neil, a seasoned veterinarian with 43 years of experience, played a pivotal role in the recovery efforts. His vast experience includes caring for a wide range of animals, from household pets to exotic species such as rhinos and antelopes. However, he admitted that this particular rescue was unprecedented in his career.
“One might wonder how a 16-foot giraffe could vanish among the brush, but the trees are quite tall,” Dr. O’Neil remarked. He was alerted that Gracie had gone missing and was informed that despite several days of searching with helicopters, the team had been unable to locate her.
Vick Jones, the manager of Cedar Hollow Ranch, shared his astonishment at how quickly Gracie’s disappearance became a global story. “I thought maybe some locals from nearby ranches would spot her, but within 24 hours, it was all over the world,” he noted.
The search for Gracie proved challenging due to the rugged terrain of the Texas Hill Country and dense underbrush. A breakthrough occurred when a remote game camera captured her image, much to the surprise of the ranch owners, who were monitoring the deer feeder.
With her location now known, the focus shifted to the logistics of bringing Gracie home. Dr. O’Neil explained that this involved coordination among various teams, including helicopter crews and transport personnel, who had to devise a strategy to access her remote location.
On the morning of the rescue, a crew successfully tranquilized Gracie from a helicopter in an open area. A specialized trailer designed for her safe transport was then brought in. “The helicopter crew landed, equipped her with a halter and blindfold, and we guided her onto the trailer. It took approximately seven or eight miles to transport her back to the county road,” Dr. O’Neil recounted.
The Real County sheriff praised the flawless execution of the rescue, confirming that Gracie suffered no injuries during her three-week ordeal or the recovery process. After some time for planning, she is now safely reunited with her owners.
Dr. O’Neil is optimistic about Gracie’s recovery and plans to check on her in the coming days to ensure her well-being.
