Fort Worth’s Bencjones, pronounced “Ben C. Jones,” is set to release a new three-track EP titled Love Got in the Way. The title track, a moody alt-pop anthem reminiscent of mid-2010s hits from artists like Cobra Man and Twin Shadow, was released last Friday as a prelude to the EP’s official debut on October 7. This upcoming EP marks the producer and multi-instrumentalist’s third, adding to the four albums and three singles he has released since 2019. For this project, he has partnered with the esteemed Dallas indie label Idol Records, which boasts a roster of notable North Texas acts including The Old 97’s and Flickerstick.
For Love Got in the Way, Bencjones undertook much of the production and engineering work independently. While he previously collaborated with producers Ty Macklin and Peter Wierenga at Alpha and Omega studios in Fort Worth, he expanded his horizons this time by recording at CPS Studios in North Richland Hills and his own Bencjones Mobile Studios, alongside Alpha Omega. The mixing and mastering were handled by Kent Stump, known for his work with The Toadies and Megan Trainor, at his Crystal Clear Sound studio.
The opportunity to sign with Idol Records came about almost serendipitously. After a performance at the House of Blues in Dallas, Bencjones spoke with KXT program director Benji McPhail, who encouraged him to share his new EP with Idol founder Erv Karwelis. Impressed by what he heard, Karwelis welcomed Bencjones to the label.
Karwelis noted that Jones’ “reputation as a versatile multi-instrumentalist and sharp pop craftsman with a knack for memorable hooks” played a significant role in his decision to sign the artist. Bencjones’ eclectic sound blends elements of alt-rock, pop, R&B, and country. He describes Love Got in the Way as a culmination of songs that had been on hold, stemming from a collection of rock-oriented material that did not align with the style of his previous release, All We Really Needed Was a Chance, from 2025. This new EP marks a return to the guitar-driven sound of his 2019 debut album, Just One Gun, allowing him to reconnect with his musical roots.

On behalf of the bands Son of Stan, Pablo & The Hemphill 7, and Darth Vato, heartfelt gratitude is extended to everyone who attended their recent performance at Tulips FTW. The sight of over 300 attendees singing along was a truly memorable experience. While the crowd had a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of 2006, the engagement with the music felt more like the days when social media was not as dominant, allowing for a more genuine connection among concert-goers. Although some phones were held up to capture moments, the majority were simply there to enjoy the atmosphere, share drinks, and sing with the bands.
