In Houston, a large crowd gathered on the Dunlavy bridge overlooking Highway 59 to pay tribute to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and demand justice following his death during an ICE operation.
The rally, held at Ervan Chew Park, was organized by We The Lucha and Immigration Youth Texas, with support from numerous community organizations. Family members of Salgado Araujo, along with Congressman Al Green, joined activists and community members in calling for transparency and accountability regarding the circumstances of his death.
Participants filled the pedestrian bridge with signs while listening to speakers who addressed both Salgado Araujo’s case and the broader implications of immigration enforcement on local families. Frida Adame, founder of We The Lucha, emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Our existence is our resistance.” She expressed solidarity with immigrant communities, acknowledging the fears they face and the necessity of standing up for their rights.
Attendees included loved ones of Salgado Araujo, community advocates, faith leaders, and elected officials, all united in their call for justice. Yesenia Hernandez, a participant, shared her personal connection to the issue, saying, “Lorenzo reminded me of my family. It hits too close to home and my mom fought too hard for a future for me to not sit here in the heat and fight for her.” She stressed that human rights should not be a negotiable issue.
Many participants expressed their reasons for attending the rally, emphasizing their support for Salgado Araujo’s family and their solidarity with Houston’s immigrant community. Organizers pledged to continue their advocacy for Salgado Araujo’s family and others affected by immigration enforcement actions.
