An incident involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shooting a man occurred on Sunday morning in North Austin, according to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis. The shooting took place in the 7000 block of West Anderson, and while authorities have yet to confirm the details surrounding the event, it has prompted an investigation led by ICE.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has stated that ICE will oversee the investigation, with assistance from Austin police and the Texas Rangers. Currently, no information regarding the identities or conditions of those involved has been released.
Emergency services were alerted to a reported shooting around 12:56 PM, with paramedics arriving within minutes to find an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was subsequently transported to a local trauma center and is reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Chief Davis confirmed that a federal agent from ICE was involved in the shooting, clarifying that Austin police did not engage in any part of the incident but were present to manage traffic in the vicinity.
In light of the shooting, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed his outrage, stating that the city has a duty to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide clarity to the public. He emphasized the need for an investigation that is independent and comprehensive, questioning the credibility of an ICE-led inquiry alone.
During a news conference at City Hall, Watson reiterated the community’s right to know the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He mentioned that the Texas Rangers would play a vital role in the investigation due to their access to information early in the incident.
The Travis County District Attorney’s office has also released a statement, underscoring the necessity for transparency and requesting that both the Austin Police Department and the DA’s office be equal partners in the investigation. They called for federal cooperation in accessing relevant evidence, hinting at the potential for state law violations in this incident.
Local politicians, including Texas state Rep. Vikki Goodwin and U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, have voiced their concerns regarding the shooting, labeling it as part of a troubling trend involving ICE actions. Casar called for accountability and transparency, demanding the release of body camera footage from the incident.
As of now, the victim’s identity and further details about the ICE operation remain undisclosed. It remains uncertain whether the individual was the target of the ICE activity that preceded the shooting. The investigation is still in its early stages, with further updates expected as new information emerges.
