After enduring a five-year journey toward a life-saving kidney transplant at a Houston hospital, Yamileth Fuentes experienced a devastating setback when a criminal scandal led to the abrupt shutdown of the program. However, she ultimately found a second chance at another hospital, albeit accompanied by new financial hurdles.
Yamileth Fuentes, a former kindergarten teacher, was placed on the transplant list at Memorial Hermann after being diagnosed with kidney disease. “I went to Memorial Hermann to get on the list,” she recalled. “They told me I needed to commit to five years upfront.” After diligently fulfilling all requirements over the years, she was disheartened to learn that the hospital had shut down its transplant program due to serious allegations against a transplant surgeon.
Dr. John Stevenson Bynon Jr. faces federal charges for allegedly falsifying medical records, which may have compromised patients’ chances of survival and eroded trust in the transplant system. Yamileth learned about the scandal while watching television, and her immediate reaction was one of despair: “I said no, please God, no.” Her daughter, Celeste Hidalgo, expressed her frustration, stating, “I was upset. Not only was it affecting her, but it was impacting many other patients as well.”
In search of a solution, Yamileth turned to Methodist Hospital, where she was fortunate to receive a new kidney on April 18. Despite this life-saving procedure, she now faces financial strain as she relies on Social Security disability benefits, and the costs of necessary medications are mounting. Nevertheless, Yamileth remains optimistic, placing her faith in God as she navigates her new reality.
The journey has been challenging, but Yamileth Fuentes stands resilient, determined to make the most of her second chance at life.
